Conheça a história do leash, a cordinha da prancha, e mais algumas dicas de como usá-la de maneira adequada.

Pat introduziu o invento, preso à prancha por uma ventosa, em 1971, durante uma competição internacional, em Malibu, da qual foi desclassificado por utilizar a tal “corda de prego”, como apelidaram. O triste e curioso é que o famoso inventor de nossas roupas de borracha e criador da primeira surf shop, Jack O’Neill, pai de Pat, foi o primeiro a se acidentar por conta da cordinha, que esticou durante um caldo e, quando ele emergiu, a prancha voltou em alta velocidade, atingindo seu olho. Hoje sua figura de barba longa e tapa-olho tipo pirata é conhecida no mundo todo – e isso não impediu que ele enxergasse o futuro.

A ideia se desenvolveu e revolucionou o surf. Muito mais gente, mesmo sem habilidade como nadador, pôde se arriscar nas ondas. A preguiça de tentar algo novo, errar e ter que nadar atrás da prancha acabou. Os banhistas ficaram mais seguros e a polícia teve que nos deixar surfar. Hoje, 90% dos surfistas utilizam o leash.

EVOLUÇÃO
Houve tentativas de prender a cordinha no bico da prancha e na mão do surfista. Não deu certo. As primeiras versões foram construídas com tubos cirúrgicos, elásticos demais. Depois, ao menos no Brasil, alguém pensou em colocar um fio de nylon mais longo que o tubo por dentro da “tripa de mico”, como era conhecida por aqui, limitando o quanto a cordinha esticava, criando mais resistência para o equipamento. O problema era o tranco, quando o nylon chegava ao limite e, de todo jeito, havia a estilingada de volta. Quando o equipamento surgiu não havia onde prendê-lo, por isso a galera furava a quilha (das monoquilhas) para passar o nylon.

Depois as pranchas ganharam “pitas”. Um relevo de fibra e resina com um buraco, incorporado ao glass. Os plugues, ou ralinhos, atuais começaram como canos de PVC cortados, transpassados por um prego de cobre cortado. A Val Surf ficou famosa com uma versão que utilizava extensores elásticos, como os usados para prender pranchas no rack do carro. Depois, um dos primeiros fabricantes de cordinhas em larga escala foi o Santista “Chico Preto”, da Surf Sol, ainda atuante no mercado.

Hoje se utiliza uretano de várias espessuras e comprimentos, dependendo do tipo e tamanho de ondas que você pretende surfar. Esse material é resistente o bastante para não quebrar e elástico o suficiente para não dar tranco e nem estilingar com tanta potência. Mesmo assim é sempre bom proteger a cabeça quando emergir depois de um tombo.

INOVAÇÕES E DICAS
Para que a cordinha não rasgue a rabeta da prancha a partir da borda criou-se uma faixa de nylon mais larga, presa entre a cordinha e a prancha. Por isso o nylon que amarra a cordinha à prancha tem sempre que ser mais curto que a distância do copinho à borda. Antes dos desenroladores, as cordinhas, depois de algumas ondas, podiam parecer uma sucuri enrolando em seus pés.

As primeiras “pezeiras” eram feitas de couro, como um garrote. Hoje fecham por meio de velcro e são produzidas com neoprene para dar mais conforto. Algumas contam com o quick-release, para situações extremas. É um pino ou alça que quando puxado desprende a cordinha da pezeira, caso sua prancha fique presa nos corais ou enrole numa rede, por exemplo. Para ondas realmente grandes existe um sistema conhecido como “double trouble”. Trata-se de dois copinhos para prender a cordinha com dois cordões de nylon diferentes. Isso divide a pressão em todo o sistema e, se um quebrar, você ainda pode contar com o outro. Para bodyboards há uma versão com uretano espiral. A cordinha fica como uma mola, diminuindo a possibilidade de enrolar no braço.

LEMBRE-SE

1 – Se você apagar por algum motivo a prancha presa a seu pé pode salvá-lo.

2 – Cheque sempre o equipamento. Os fios de nylon e seus nós.

3 – Giradores devem girar para a cordinha não enrolar. Lave com água doce para ficar livre de areia e sal, que, por serem abrasivos, a emperram e desgastam. Alguns são presos por parafusos que podem desenroscar com o uso. Reaperte.

4 – O fio de uretano, que não pode ter boqueira nem estar muito ressecado, se usado fora das especificações para as quais foi feito, pode esticar demais, perdendo a elasticidade e resistência, ficando perigosamente mais fino e fraco. Veja as especificações antes de comprar.

5 – Uma cordinha deve ter ao menos o tamanho de sua prancha, respeitando o limite menor de 6 pés. Quando muito curta vai puxar sua perna e pode fazer a prancha voltar muito rápido em sua direção, além de facilitar que a prancha parta ao meio. Se a cordinha for longa demais pode te arrastar muito tempo por baixo da água num caldo. Além disso, você levará muito mais tempo para conseguir pegar sua prancha no meio da série.

6 – Lave sempre seu equipamento com água doce e deixe secar à sombra com o velcro fechado.
